The decline of the bigband, because of the war, gave birth to this a new style of music. Beebop had fast tempos, complex harmonies, intricate melodies and rhythm sections that had a steady beat on the bass and cymbal. Small combos came back into style then and some new and some old stars became the leaders of "Bop". "Dizzy Gillespie's" trademark goatee and beret supplied the visual effect for this kind of "Cool" music. The term "Cool Jazz" was used on the west coast and was a softer form of bebop. Trumpeter "Miles Davis", pianist "Thelonious Monk" and drummer "Max Roach" all helped pave the way for the sounds of bebop. |

"Thelonious Monk" a pianist is regarded as one of the most important composers in jazz and his colaberation with "John Coltrane" produced a wonderful album called "Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane". Coltrane was described by his fellow artists as a mystic, prophet, angel and a saint. At first his music was considered to far out but when really listened to the music took you to wonderful places. "Sonny Rollins", a saxophonist was also very popular and recorded many albums. One of his best was called "The Bridge" with Clifford Brown, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. The Bebop era also came with the wave of the hippie generation. Free Love, new language, sandal shoes, beads, goetees and beatnicks. |
